The Collage called "Tough Ol' Broad" is presented with an attitude of assertiveness and awareness of self in relation to others and reveals a blatant rebellion against societal views constricting women to the docile, demure frail fawns and ferries of a gosmer dream, which is so often society's expectation for the "young ladies." The surface of this collage is racked with scratches, x marks, strong color slices and tumultuous textures, all denoting a restless spirit that never gives way to the constrictions of society. Throughout my art work, I find that the very act of making art through self expression is my own personal form of acting on feminist goals of self-direction and taking action combined with sensitivity, awareness and feeling serving as the guiding compass. The day I discovered Abstract Expressionism in my early collage days was the day my inspiration to create struck a match and lit a fire of never ending life force. I left realism behind and began a lifelong exploration of the wonders of the human spirit unleashed to discover a complete freedom of expression without repression, which to me is the ultimate goal of Feminism. I love to see my female art students where I teach high school Art discover the power of freedom in my art work and watching how it transpires their vision of what art can be a true release of feeling and expression while conveying personal values and desires. It's so exciting to see them "catch the drift" and sail off on their own exploration of expressive feelings and desires on canvas.
